Topeka Vacuum

by The Arches

This EP is the tale of a frontier land and a modern day vacuum store in Topeka, Kansas. The tapestry of history is rich and The Arches use pieces of Kansas history to weave the fabric of this album.

The state of Kansas derives it's name from the Kanza (Kansa, Kaw) Indian tribe. Cryus Holliday, founder of Topeka, the capital of Kansas, also broke ground in 1868 for the famous Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

From Native American to Vice President of the United States, Charley Curtis lived an incredible life. When Cheyenne warriors raided the Kaw reservation in 1868, a very young Curtis joined a Kaw interpreter, Joe Jim, on a 60-mile ride to Topeka to seek assistance from the Governor. As a Republican, he went on to become the Vice President under President Herbert Hoover from 1929-1933.

Topeka Vacuum store is on the corner of S Kansas Ave and 15th Street around the corner from the Brown vs Board of Education National Historic Site, ground zero for desegregation in public schools in the 1950's. Harold has worked there for a dozen years, but doesn't know why he stays. Maybe vacuum sales and repair are a microcosm of life's mishaps, injustice and subsequent clean up.

Enjoy! The Arches
